What's Happening in Writing?
In third through fifth grade, students spend much their writing focusing on response to literature – whether it’s fictional, informational, opinion (or argumentative based), biographical, or even poetry. Students are expected to support their topic sentence clearly and thoroughly by having multiple reasons why (or how), text evidence and elaboration. For extended responses, students will write multiple paragraphs that usually follow or are similar to an expository outline (example below).
Our current focus is on strategies to use strategies to convey opinions and state arguments. This can include a variety of strategies such as paraphrasing / summarizing the evidence, using data, idioms, hyperbole, and examples that support their opinion. Students will also continue to elaborate on their thesis statement and self-evaluate using the state rubric for writing.
