Reading Skills
Our focus in fourth grade is on non-fiction. Students will use their critical thinking skills to identify the central idea (formerly known as main idea) and the relevant details that support it. From there students will craft summaries. In addition, we will begin our study on figurative language with a focus on similes and metaphors and how to use context to explain their meaning.
Our focus in fifth grade is also non-fiction. Students will use their critical thinking skills to identify the central idea (formerly known as main idea), analyze the text structure and how it impacts their understanding. They should also be able to explain how the author supports their claim with evidence (how did ___ help the author convey their perspective?).
Literature Circles
Literature circles have begun and are centered around accountable talk and written response. All students will develop and increase their reading skills in the areas of summarizing, questioning, discussion, visualization, analyzing author's craft, word analysis, and characterization. The goal is for students to have in depth conversations about literature and ask critical thinking questions about each skill to their peers.
Book Reports
Students will participate in book reports. Each book report will have a focus skill connecting to our literacy unit of study. Students will have a menu of types of projects they can choose from. Most choices are not the traditional "write a summary about what you read" type of report. Check back for information on when it will be assigned.

Latin and Greek
This year, students will continue to learn how to break words apart to determine their meaning in addition to using the context clues found in a passage. One strategy to help students with this is the study of Latin and Greek roots since many of the words in the English language comes from them.
Students will learn 2-4 Latin and Greek roots a week, along with derivations for each root. (Derivations are words that use the roots. Example: biology is a derivation of the roots bios and logos.) Students will be assessed on the derivations in the weekly phonics assessment.
ROOTS:
Autos – self (G)
Pathos – feeling (G)
Thermos – heat (G)
Curro – run (L)
DERIVATIONS:
sympathy
automatic
thermotropic
excursion
