What are we studying?
We will begin 4th and 5th grade with a study of geography and analyzing maps. Students should be able to identify cardinal points, latitude / longitude locations, as well as major global features.
Next we covered Native American cultures, regions and tribes. Fourth grade will focus on tribes in Florida, while 5th grade will compare and contrast North and Central American tribal groups. Both grades should be able to identify adaptations that Native Americans used to survive their environment.
We will finish the second quarter studying explorers and their motivations for traveling to the Western Hemisphere. Fourth grade will analyze their affect on Florida. While fifth grade will analyze the different European impacts of colonization, both politically and on Native Americans.
In the third quarter, we are studying the transition period of Florida occupation when it was owned by Spain, then England, Spain again, and finally the United States. This period includes the French and Indian War, the American Revolution.
The fourth quarter will focus on the American Revolution, Constitution, government, and beyond. Students should be able to explain the importance of key events, documents, and people and the role they play in the development and first century of US history.
